James Fernando is a jazz pianist, composer, and teacher in the Greater Boston area who has completed four years of studies at the New England Conservatory of Music Preparatory Program. James has been offered scholarships to study at the Berklee College of Music including a full scholarship to attend over the Summer as a member of the 2013 Berklee Summer Jazz Workshop. He has established himself as one of the top young jazz musicians in the country, being selected as a member of the 2013 Jazz Band of America, as a finalist for the 2013 GRAMMY Camp – Jazz Session, a 2014 YoungArts Winner, and for a Downbeat Student Music Award. James was also recently nominated for the Jazz Fellowship Awards of the American Pianists Association. Gaining recognition both locally and nationally for his talent, he is also both a respected composer and teacher. James teaches lessons privately as well as assistant directing the Pollard Middle School Jazz Band and Jazz Combo. He is currently a senior at Needham High School, where he is a member of the jazz ensemble.
